The wise bride knows the secret
meanings of the herbs and dried flowers . . .
It is a little known fact that the bride that carries rosemary
in her bouquet rules the household! At Salt Box Gallery Herbs in
Hubbard, floral designer, Marian Sebastiano makes sure all her
bridal bouquets contain
several fragrant sprigs of rosemary.
Marian specializes in dried floral weddings and her designs
have been
featured in "Floral & Nature Crafts", a magazine by Better Homes &
Gardens
Publications.
A dried floral wedding is for the bride who wants something
unique. Dried blossoms are best suited for fall and winter
weddings. Their colors can be subtle and alluring or they can be
vibrant and colorful. The advantage is their everlasting beauty
that can be used to adorn the couple's home. An altar basket of
wedding flowers can later become a fireside
basket. An arm bouquet is a wall swag over the wedding
photograph. Even pew bows of
dried flowers can grace a staircase handrail.
Herbs and flowers have many magical effects on people. Their
ability to heal, their lasting fragrances and their beauty that has
inspired poets and lovers throughout the centuries have enabled them
to become a means of communication. Each herb and flower has a
meaning, many dating back
to the 1500's, but popularized in the Victorian era, where
floriography, or the "Language of Flowers" was part of the education
of all proper young ladies.
Today, we use the meanings of the flowers to add special
messages for the happy wedding couple. Most familiar is the meaning
of the rose as a symbol of love and desire. Lavender is for luck,
sage for health and domestic virtue, mint is a symbol of joy, and
all couples need a little thyme-for
courage. The dried florals themselves are symbols of everlasting
love.
If you do not elect to have a dried floral wedding, perhaps you
would like to have the flowers in your bouquet dried. Marian can
also dry most of the flowers used in your bouquet. Rather than have
the bouquet
remade, most couples choose to have the blossoms put to use in a
more practical
way, like a romantic wreath for the bedroom or a floral frame for
the wedding photo or
even a nosegay to decorate a Bible.
When a bride receives her bouquet before the ceremony, she
whispers to Marian, "Is it in here?" Marian nods; she ALWAYS
includes the rosemary, which by the way is a symbol of remembrance
and fidelity.
